customize resolv.conf even when using network Manager

Having my laptop configured with dhcp through network manager (Ubuntu jaunty at the time of writing) is what I need in most networks. Often though, I need to contact hosts living under another domain. Traditionally, that’s wat the search option is in /etc/resolv.conf. It still is, but this file now gets configured dynamically through resolvconf, which in this case gets it data from network manager.

Hacking dhclient.conf won’t help, as the classic ifup ifdown scripts don’t touch this. Configuring extra search domains through Network Manager itself is no-go also, as you then need to configure static ip’s or at least static all of the dns entries which don’t get your dns server, domain name and search domain configured by dhcp also. What I needed, was adding search domains to resolv.conf.

Long story short, just add an additional search stanza line to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail.

Getting Network-Manager to do what you want isn’t allways that flexible, and configuration options are limited when you hand over control to the nm daemon. but so far I manged to let it do most of what I needed, which isn’t all that special actually. I you wan’t to avoid NM taking control of you interface, just be sure to add an iface entry to /etc/network/interfaces, Network Manager takes only control of the interfaces which only have an auto line.

    The next Geekdinner 9.10 will be on October 27. We’ll be eating at the wok restaurant Chess Cafe Gent‎, Ottergemsesteenweg – Zuid 802, 9000 Gent‎. Entrance & drinks starts at 1900, be sure to arrive no later than 2000. As for dinner, one size & price fits all menu was choosen. The all-in price for the evening is 43 EURO, that’s the “Formule Koningin” group menu with a little upmark for extended drinks during 19h-20h

    Muziek concert

    Ik ben de voorbije dagen enkele keren van mijn stoel gevallen.

    Blijkbaar ben ik een van die naïevelingen die verwacht dat een artiest die een optreden geeft, ook live zingt. En dus niet aan playback doet. Voor die laatste categorie kan je naar gesponsorde dingen gaan van de categorie van Tien Om Te Zien. Geen kwaad woord over dat programma op zich, maar daar associeerde ik ook niet de begrippen ‘concert’ of ‘optreden’ bij.

    Er is toch wel een verschil tussen een présence op een populaire show in een voor het publiek gratis (hoewel, tegenwoordig..) commerciële tv-uitzending, en een concert waar je een – tegenwoordig ferm – duur ticketje voor koopt. Ik weet nog dat ik ergens in 1991 voor een 1050 Belgische frankskes (een 26 Euro nota bene) in Vorst naar Dire Straits ging kijken. Zijn er nog veel dingen die de voorbije 20 jaar verdriedubbeld zijn in prijs?

    Maar de rant ging daar niet over. Wie een show wil zien waar dans en show het belangrijkste is, die kan naar Disney On Ice gaan kijken voor mijn part. Opnieuw geen kwaad woord over dat genre wel te verstaan.

    Maar als je door het leven wil gaan als de Queen of Pincess of Pop, dan moet je toch iets meer in je mars hebben dan dansen en een goede show. IMHO. En als je tussendoor toch enkel regels zingt of spreekt, dan lag men toch verwachten dat die in toon zijn.

    Pop staat voor pop music. Dat komt van popular music. Pop is dus wel een adjectief in dat verhaal. En ht substantiële woord hierin is nog steeds music. Hoe playback in dat verhaal kan passen gaat mijn petje te boven. Zijn we nu allemaal zo afgestompt dat we dat zonder meer slikken? I say no more. Dalen in mijn achting doen ze. Ze moeten het maar weten.

    Let op, ik ben de eerste om een goede show bij een muziek concert te appreciëren. Ik ben geen grote concert ganger, maar mijn beste herinnering op dat gebied heb ik aan Tante Tina. Dat was en steengoed muzikaal concert aangevuld met een stevige visuele show.

    Een muziek concert, weze het nu pop of rock of whatever, houdt een live perfomance in. Punt. We vinden het tegenwoordig al abnormaal dat we moeten betalen om hun muziek te downloaden. Als ze zo verderdoen hebben ze straks totaal geen recht meer om ne cent te vragen. Tenzij je deel uitmaakt van het gepeupel die gewoon de marketing molen inslikt natuurlijk. De reden dat ik echter naar een concert wil gaan is net de muzikale diversiteit die een live optreden met zich meebrengt.

    As I had some spare days in June, I suddenly decided a couple of weeks ago to do the RHCE exam. So I went on a trip to Mons today, and was pleased to meet Sebastien irl. Thanks again for your support, Seb!

    The exam procedure changed recently, and contains now only one single session of 3.5 hours. The topics by themselves are not hard, and should be easily mastered by every sysadmin with some decent experience. Some things are Red Hat specifics of course, so don’t try it if you never worked on a Red Hat (or obviously CentOS) box. What makes it hard though, is that you get a lot of topics you need to handle within a relatively short period. If you need to start diving in man pages to figure out how to configure things, better prepare yourself a bit more.

    Oh, and yes, I passed 🙂 . The RHCE part was pretty good actually, but I was in luck to just have slightly over the needed 70% for the RHCT part though. Thanks to one topic I didn’t master well enough.. oh well.
